These days most of us have made the jump to digital cameras. Digital cameras have opened up a whole new world of being able to print only the photos you want, editing the picture to enhance the quality and printing all different sizes for a fraction of the cost. People back up their pictures on discs and now days most of us have a USB memory stick (also known as a Thumb drive) containing our most precious memories. Many even have gone a step further and backed up their photos on external hard drives. Here lies a problem, one many of you are not even aware of... THEY CAN CORRUPT!
All of these devices will deteriorate over the years. Disks, USB memory sticks and external hard drives should not be relied upon to hold your memories solely. How many of you only print out a few pictures at a time knowing that you can always print more lately? While most of us know that our computers are vulnerable to crashing and do a back up unaware that our backups are corroding. I recently had a friend who stored all their photos of their photos on to an external hard drive they had bought only to have it crash on them. They were told they may be able to recover some of the files and at a cost of over $1000.00. If the computer expert knew the names of the file he would have a better chance. She lost pictures of her babies’ births and so much more. Most of us treasure these photos and would be absolutely devastated to lose these memories.
You can buy some disks that are said to last between eight and ten years. One friend I know has two hard drives and alternates backing them up weekly so worst case scenario is losing one week’s worth of photos. I personally have my photos backed up on disc plus memory sticks plus computer, in saying that I haven’t backed up in at least a month but I won’t erase my memory from my camera until I have done that. I have now heard of several people losing their photos like this. I would suggest you bite the bullet and print most of your photos straight away. At least if you lose them you have a print on hand. Prints can be scanned and enlarged/edited at a later date. I would also ensure you get around to emailing your favourite memories to your family and friends so hopefully they would have a copy if things go wrong.
For those of you who have discs from years ago. Check the discs & do another copy, don’t forget to date it. It is better to do this every couple of years. A little bit of time now will save you a lot of distress later.
Christmas Giveaway
From now until Friday December 19th you have the opportunity to win the new Making Memories Slice starter kit. All you have to do is spend $75 or more in a visit and your name goes into the draw. Southern Cross Kids Camps
300 and counting
“Southern Cross Kids Camp” run week long camps for abused and at-risk kids across Australia. With the help of ‘Buddies’ these kids create memory books that focus on their holiday, sadly this might be the only happy childhood memories recorded for them. Due to the success of the books, a call has been put out to help with creating layouts for all nine camps in Australia and NZ. That’s 325 kids’ memory albums or 6300 pages! Here at Scrap It Flaunt it we have decided to support this worthy cause and ask our loyal customers to help us to achieve our goal of 1000 6x6 layouts by next March. You can dig into your stash (I know you've got a big stash of papers & cardstock) or use the growing stash here at the shop ... and start creating. Simply don't have time to create, but really want to contribute. You can drop your old stash to us at the shop and we will make sure it is put to a good.
Here's what you need to make: Pages that are 6" x 6".Layouts will contain one photo per page (approx 5" x 3.5"); add a photo mat (I cut mine 5 1/4” x 3 3/4).Make a space for a bit of journaling. No need to punch holes ... they're being put into 6x6 page protectors in a 6x6 albumAre you keen? Are you excited?I know we are. We challenge everyone who is able to donate to this worthy cause, to rise to the occasion and create for these kids in need. You might be thinking ... I can only do 2 layouts ... well ... that's 2 more than they had before.Do you get together with friends to scrap or do craft? Do your kids enjoy scrapbooking? Get them involved making a couple of pages for other kids who don't have as great a life as they do, a brilliant way of sharing some meaningful time and teaching them about helping out those in need.Or you can come down to Scrap IT Flaunt It on a Wednesday and create some of these layouts with design team members Leonie Vellender and Jodi Belton.SCKC need our help, we can make a real difference and all with our left over scraps!!Come on!
